The punch heard around the world | By: John Torres

john torres

john torresWe all knew this was going to happen at one point or another after it all started with a 3 run homer that gave the Jays a 6-3 lead in game 5, and escalated with an exaggerated bat flip by Jose Bautista. Let’s fast forward to May, 15,2016, Bautista gets drilled by a fastball inside by Matt bush who I need to remind you has prior convictions meaning he has a troubled past w/ alcohol abuse and DUI arrest. This time last year Matt bush wasn’t even on a major league roster or in the minor leagues at that he was in prison on a third DUI charge he has an extensive troubled history. So many questions come in mind when you try and figure out why was it Matt bush that threw up and in on Bautista? Why was it not Sam Dyson? Did Matt bush hold some animosity towards the Blue Jays for releasing him from the organization back in 2009? Or was it that he really had his teammates back regardless of not being on the roster last year? Also to note here Sam Dyson served up that 3 run home run in game 5 of the ALDS last year so if anybody was going to get this revenge plot going I thought it would be him not a 30 year old rookie that wasn’t even in the game of baseball last year. So okay like I eluded to earlier in this article Jose Bautista gets drilled by an inside fastball and the umpire warns both benches Jose Bautista takes his base and two batters later Justin smokes hits a grounder that would normally be a routine double play but Jose Bautista slides hard past the second base bag disrupting the throw from Rugned Odor to first base and odor didn’t like the fact that Bautista slid that aggressively past the bag so odor pushes Bautista and punches him in the face and the benches clear and the teams are just going after each other all you see is red and blue. I’m not advocating that this was the right thing to do but there is bad blood between this team and this was bound to happen one way or another. Texas is smart for waiting until the last game AB’S Bautistas last at bat to do this because these two teams don’t play each other again this year unless they made it to the playoffs and met each other there. Let me reiterate that again that was the punch herd around the world and Bautista got the end of the bad stick with that one.

  Quotable’s

“Ugly and unfortunate,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. “To me, it was gutless. We’ve played 7 games… The other 29 teams out there, if they had an issue with you, they come at you right away. To wait until the end, that just kind of tells me a little something.”

“{I was} pretty surprised, and obviously that’s the only reason he got me, “Bautista said of odor’s punch. “He got me pretty good, so I have give him that. But it takes a little bit of a bigger man, I guess to knock me down.

“It shows at least the apparent lack of leadership they have over there when it comes to playing baseball the right way. Baseball plays are supposed to be taken care of baseball plays. I thought it was pretty cowardly of them to wait until my last at-bat to do that, in the whole series. They could have come out and done it if they just wanted to kind of send a message.”

“That’s kind of hard to say, there were a lot of things going on,” Banister said, when asked what happened during the fracas. “It looked like a hard slide into second base. These are two ballclubs that obviously are playing hard to win baseball games and are emotional.

“But as far as what happened inside the scrum out on the field, there were a lot of things going on. We could sit here for the next hour and talk about that, but I don’t have that time.”

“It’s the game, you never know what the other team’s going to do,” said Beltre, who held Bautista back after the altercation with Odor. “I thought after the warning we were going to be OK, and they decided to hit [Fielder]. They’re entitled to do whatever they want, obviously. Nothing surprises me.”

“It’s part of the game,” Odor said.

Major League Baseball has not handed down punishment yet, but Odor is certain to be suspended after punching Bautista in the face. Others could be suspended as well and a decision will likely come down Tuesday.

“I know nothing yet,” Odor said. “I’m still waiting.”

“You saw what happened,” Odor said. “For me, it was a pretty hard slide. I know he was going to come hard. I can tell when somebody is coming in hard to second base. I tried to protect myself.”

Once they faced off, Odor knew it was going to get physical. Odor quotes By T.R Sullivan/ MLB.com

“Yeah, I saw him there after the slide,” Odor said. “He was looking at me. I thought, ‘Look out.'”

“I just care about my team,” Odor said. “I don’t care about the other team. I just play the game how I play it. I play to win the game. I know I am going to be suspended for a couple of games, but I am going to keep doing what I’m doing.”

Odor was asked what he thought of Bautista.

“I respect him,” Odor said. “He plays hard.”

Is David Ortiz HOF bound? By: John Torres

john torres

john torresHold up just wait one minute, David Ortiz has had a great career but let’s not mistake this he’s not Jeter, Rivera nor Cal Ripken JR. Ortiz is one of the best clutch hitters in the history of the game there’s denying that I’ve never seen nobody that’s as clutch as David Ortiz it seems like when he comes up in big situations he relaxes and slows the game down. Ortiz is a great player but not iconic, some might argue that he’s the best DH ever in the game of baseball.

Ortiz has 512 Career home runs he’s 3rd among active players behind Pujols and A-rod but you question the fact of how many of those home runs came clean because you have to remember that David Ortiz tested positive for PED use in 2003 which in other words are Performance Enhancing Drugs. So you just question how many of those 512 home runs were legit? Only Ortiz knows that but I do know that David Ortiz was one of the 103 players that name came up in the Mitchell report that was suppose to be held anonymous. Somehow this report got leaked and I’m just paraphrasing now Ortiz is denying the failed test. The thing is when a player fails a drug test and MLB has the best drug testing system in all of sports they simply deny it they don’t take accountability for their actions they don’t own up to it.  Here are some quotes from David Ortiz back in 2003,

“Today I was informed by a reporter that I was on the 2003 list of MLB players to test positive for performing -enhancing substances. This happened right before our game and it blindsided me.”

“I want to talk about this situation and I will as soon as I have more answers. In the meantime I want to let you know how I am approaching this situation. One I have already contacted the players association to confirm if this report is true. I have just been told that the report is true. Based on the way I lived my life, I am surprised to learn that I tested positive.”

Okay those were some quotes from David Ortiz himself in 2003, now since this is the final season of Ortiz the question will then be is he HOF worthy? So in 2002 Ortiz hit 20 home runs for the twins then jumps back and crushes 31 for the 2003 Red Sox. All I’m saying is that if Ortiz gets into the HOF then I don’t see how Roger Clemens doesn’t get in or Barry Bonds or Jeff Bagwell or even Alex Rodriguez when he decides to hang it up, this will make for an interesting decision for the writers that have a vote. Thank you for checking out my latest article.

The Yankees bats are starting to heat up

johntorresWe’ve all made a big deal that the Yankees offense wasn’t producing especially with runners in scoring position (RISP).
So it seems like when the weather heats up so does the bats. Entering Tuesday 05-10-2016 the Yankees find their selves in last place in the AL east, but during the current home stand the Yankees are 4-1 scoring 5.6 runs a game while hitting .273 collectively. During the current home stand the Yankees are pitching with an ERA of 3.80 while hitting 7 home runs. The Yankees entered Tuesday with Masahiro Tanaka taking the mound. Tanaka gave up 6 earned runs while striking out 4 and walking zero the third start this season that he hasn’t walked a single batter. While Gregorious hits a 3 RBI (run batted in) double to give Yankees 5-3 lead. Tanaka gave 3 home runs a two run homer to cuthbert, a solo homer to Cain and another 3 run bomb to Cain. At that point the Kansa City Royals have a 6-5 lead over the Yankees. Heading into the bottom of the 7th McCann is at first base with a long opposite single, Beltran was after and Beltran struck out but wait a minute he actually doesn’t strikes out the count restarts at 0-2 because Joakim  Soria actually balks and McCann ends up in scoring position. Beltran gets out any way and there is two outs and Ackley is after Beltran and he hits a clutch single between the third baseman and short stop luckily for McCann it wasn’t hit hard enough and he’s able to slide in head first and the Yankees tie it up 6-6 Ackley is able to move to second on the throw. Hicks is able to hit an RBI clutch double to give the Yankees a 7-6 lead at that point the Yankees are getting some momentum. We head to the top of the 8th and Miller serves up a 2-1 Slider down the pipe to Lorenzo Cain and we’re tied 7-7 Miller is able to get out of the inning just allowing the one run, also a note to remember Miller relinquished his closers role to accommodate Chapman, pitching the 8th as opposed to the 9th is a whole different mentality that you have to have. Heading into the bottom of the 8th Ben Gamel hits a grounder that seems to be routine but with Gamels speed that forces Escobar to bobble the ball and kick it with the heel of his leg. That misplay would play huge for the Yankees as Brett Gardner hits an RBI clutch double with one as Ben Gamel scores all the way from first. out to take the lead 8-7. Castro gets hit in the shoulder he takes first, then McCann comes up and hits a huge 1 out 2 RBI double scoring Castro all the way from first. The Yankees take a 10-7 lead. Chapman records his first Yankee save with a man on third and retires Cain for the final out.

“We would have lost 7-0 a couple weeks ago Brett Gardner said”.

Major League Baseball Shift (MLB)

baseball

                MLB should banned the shift

The shift in all of baseball should be banned because a lot of outs that should be outs are just now base hits. This creates a problem because baseball was meant to be played w/ 2 men manning the opposite ends of the second base bag, and 2 men on the opposite corners of the infield. I understand that teams want to play by the numbers and they want to shift on pull hitters and they got the whole left side of the infield w/ no man In sight. That whole space is open but it’s easier said then done to hit in that direction because guys are pressing and can’t elevate the ball that way. No other team gets shifted on more then the New York Yankees.

National League East – MLB 2016

baseball

National League East – MLB 2016

This division will be tough no doubt about it w/ a couple of teams in the division on a rebuild. This breakdown will give you an elaborate showing of what the National League east will consist of. Enjoy the article.

The New York Mets- the mets have the best rotation in all of baseball hands down. They have an certified ace 1-5 and don’t forget about wheeler coming back from Tommy John surgery in mid June. That will give the mets 6 pitchers for 5 spots at this point , you know what they say you can never have enough pitching. Two ways you can go about this when wheeler gets back to the team, 1- send colon to the bullpen of 2- have a 6 man rotation giving each pitcher an extra days of rest. The mets pitching gives them a chance to win each game.

The offense did get better w/ the resigning of Yoenis Cespedes he’s a guy that can provide major punch in the lineup w/ wright if he can stay healthy and at least play 135 games then the mets should compete for another NL east title. If Lucas Duda can have a 30 plus homer year for the first time in his career then he would potent offensive protection for Yoenis Cespedes. The mets didn’t really get an upgrade after losing Daniel Murphy to free agency they replaced him w/ Neil Walker and they had similar numbers in 2015.

The bullpen also got better w/ the addition of Antonio Bestardo. Famalia has a chance to be dominate again but hopefully that can translate over to the postseason.

Miami Marlins -really like this Miami team their key stars are Jose Fernandez and Giancarlo Stanton. If Stanton can stay healthy and play in 155 games then I believe this Marlin team will compete for a Wild Card position. This team has a good lineup after a great season from Bour in 2015 the teams needs him to replicate that in order for them to be competitive. They need to get Ozuna going I feel like this player can be an all star and win a batting title because he has speed he has the ability to beat out infield hits. His defense is superb they just need the bat to wake up. It will be interesting to see how Dee Gordon responds to a contract extension that he got over the off season this can go either way now that he got the contract there’s pressure off of him and now he can play or there can be a bunch of pressure ensuring that he earns every penny just look at Stanton he’s a great player but he hasn’t even been close to earning every penny on his contract health has been a big issue for him the key is for him to stay healthy this offense goes when he goes. Il really not that fond of their pitching rotation Fernandez is an ace and Chen is like a 3 you have all the sub par pitchers like Jackson, khoeler, etc. they need to be good in order for them to win at least a Wild Card spot. Pitching and defense wins ball games because they already have a potent offense.

Washington Nationals- Washington has a good group. The offense is lead by Bryce Harper the offense should be great they have a good pitching staff but the mets have a better rotation. You would wonder if the altercation that took place at the end of last season w/ Harper and papelbon will carry over or is that water under the bridge nobody really knows they both have cleared the air about it. Rendon also needs to stay healthy and put up the year he did in 2014 w/ all that said I think Washington will be in the mix for a Wild Card spot.

Philadelphia Phillies- the Phillies are one of those teams that are on a rebuild they currently have two players left from the 2008 championship team. Ryan Howard is manning first and Carlos Ruiz manning catcher. The up and coming star that you need to pay attention to is Maikel Franco this guy has the opportunity to his 30 home runs and 100 RBI’S in the very near future. The Phillies will be better then what people expect but it won’t be enough to compete they will be a little better from 2015 but they won’t really make a dent. The rotation consists of Matt Harrison, Jeremy Hellickson, Aaron Nola, Charlie Morton and Vince Velasquez. This team will finish last in the NL East in 2016.

Atlanta Braves- the braves are preparing to be a playoff team as early as 2017 when they move to the new stadium they made trades to ensure the future heading into 2017. This current roster consists of veterans like swisher, markakis, freeman, and Aybar this team traded Shelby Miller for Dansby Swanson from the D-Backs he will be manning SS starting in 2017. Everything at the moment is wrong w/ this team they lack offense, pitching and just a team that will have a hard time scoring runs this team will finish last w/ the Phillies.
